SPECIAL DEPUTY SHERIFF: PASSAIC COUNTY

This is the Tenth Installment of  Special Deputy Sheriff's in New Jersey. The County featured in this post is PASSAIC COUNTY. 

This County is in the Northern part of N.J. It is well known for the City of Patterson, as well as Paterson Falls. The first submarine was successfully launced in Paterson. It was called the "Holland Boat #1". It dove into the mighty Passaic River on May 22, 1978. This is considered the first modern submarine. It was created by John Phillip Holland.  

Somehow I got lucky and obtained three of these badges for my display. They are the smallest trinkets in the collection. They measures 2.25" by 1.00". 

There is a single panel and a ring on the face of each badge, with recessed letters. The enamel fill is still in varying shape with the very visible words:  DEPUTY SHERIFF,  PASSAIC CO,  NJ.

At Center Point are the Seals of the State of New Jersey. The seals have the gold tone plating on two of the badges indicating their age (1930-50) The third badge (top picture) is newer having the name of the State in a blue enamel ring. I estimate that rare piece to date back to early 1950's. It has been one of my collection for  about thirty years. 

They fine Badges are under glass with their brothers in this Special Deputy Collection. It hangs on the wall in my Den.  I am very glad to have it.

 

NARCOTICS SQUAD - UNAUTHORIZED BADGE

 

This Badge has been in my hands probably 20 years or more. It's a beauty, but that is about as far as it gets. The shield is unauthorized by NPD.

It apparently was made or ordered by an officer who also had an interest in the Badge Collecting Hobby. I have no idea how many of these Badges he had created or what their distribution was. 

It is in a display of mine that I call "UNIQUE BADGES." I put shields in this display that I am not positive about belonging with legitimate NPD shields. It, like its' mates, is nice to look at, but sadly is a Fake.

Enjoy looking at it, and don't buy a similar one.

SPECIAL DEPUTY SHERIFF: WARREN COUNTY

This is the Ninth Installment of  Special Deputy Sheriff's in New Jersey. The County featured in this post is WARREN COUNTY.

This is a named badge and is so marked: Albert Sands Jr.  It measures 1.00" by 0.75". 

I estimate this historical piece to date back to the 1950's. The "Blue" behind the State Seal is an indicator of this badge's age.

There are two panels on the face of this badge, with recessed letters. The enamel fill is still in good shape. The panels are above and below the large ring with the words:  DEPUTY SHERIFF,   WARREN CO. The panels show the "name," and the abbreviation of the State or "N.J.".

I could find "No History" on Albert Jr, however it appears he comes from a prominent family in Phillipsburg N.J. His father however was a very successful business man owning a Textile Factory, restaurants and even a Bank - a far cry from Law Enforcement.

Despite its' age this badge is in decent (good) condition. It is under glass, in a nice oak display case, with the other members of my Special Deputy Collection.  Of course I am very glad to have it. 

POLICE FUNNY

Cop to perp: “Did you kill this man?”

Perp: “No, he died of natural causes.”

Cop: “He was shot!” 

Perp: “Right — a bullet killed him. Bullets are made of lead, which comes from the ground. The ground is part of nature. So, he died of natural causes. Sheesh, I thought you were the cop here.”

POCKET GUN AMT "BACKUP"

AMT BACKUP

380/9MM

Above is an original "Backup Gun" by AMT of California. The full name of the company was Arcadia Machine & Tools. This gun was made in Irwindale, California.

AMT developed this firearm in the late 1970's after purchasing the company from Ordnance Manufacturing Company of El Monte, Ca. The initial caliber was .380.

Over the years the gun was made in .22 LR, .380, 9 MM, .357, .40, and .45 calibers.

These guns packed a wallop. Because of that they were advertised as the "smallest, most powerful" backup or pocket gun, when sold in the .45 caliber version.

AMT eventually became Galena Industries, and that company was taken over by High Standard in the early 2000's.

The gun above is part of the small collection of firearms that I have. It weighs 18 Oz. It is 5" stainless, and despite being around 60 years of age still fires. It takes a baby 9 MM or as described on the frame a "380/9mm kurz."

TAMPA BAY POLICE COLLECTORS SHOW

SPECIAL DEPUTY SHERIFF: OCEAN COUNTY

 

This is the Eighth Installment of  Special Deputy Sheriff's in New Jersey. The County featured in this post is OCEAN COUNTY. 

This County has a lot of nice beach communities facing the Atlantic Ocean. In the summer the population increases dramatically. The "Job" could be described as a fun work, especially doing bikini patrol on white sandy beaches. The "Specials" likely had other assignments.   

Somehow I got lucky and obtained both of these badges for my display. They are on the small side and measures 1.00" by 0.75". 

There are two Panels and a Ring on the face of these badges, with recessed letters. The blue enamel fill is still in good shape (Badge on right) with the very visible words:    SPECIAL,  DEPUTY SHERIFF,  OCEAN CO,  NJ.

At the bottom of these badges are panels with the identifiers of "N.J." (left) and "M94" (right).

At Center Point is a Seal of the State of New Jersey. One Seal sits in a Blue Circle, while the second does not. I estimate these rare pieces to date back to the 1950's. 

Despite their age these badges are in excellent condition. They are under glass with their brothers in this Special Deputy Collection. It hangs on the wall in my Den where I see it every day. I am very glad to have it.
